You will go back to the time of the ear trumpet and ear horn ERA to today's remarkable technology.  You may marvel at the crudity of the earlier hearing aids, but for their time they were no more grotesque than some medical treatments for deafness.

As technology advanced the first "transistor hearing aids" appeared late in 1952, then smaller and smaller hearing aids were possible.
